Tournament Seeding and Explanation of Terms

Tournament Seeding
Tournament seeding is determined based upon the following criteria after Regular Season play has completed:

  1. Winning Percentage (PCT)
  2. Head to Head Competition
  3. Performance Ranking (PR)
  4. Coin Flip

The website standings cannot determine Head to Head Competition results. Commissioners will need to evaluate the Head to Head Competition criteria by hand to determine seeding in the event of a tie in Winning Percentage.  Teams should not assume the Final Standings on website match the Seeding for tournament play.

Below is a description the statistics included in the League Standings report which are used to determine seeding for tournament play.

Winning Percentage ( PCT )
This is the percentage of games the team has won. Ties are counted as 1/2 a win, and 1/2 a loss. The formula used to calculate this is:

( Wins + ( 0.5 * Ties ) )
( Wins + Losses + Ties )

Performance Ranking ( PR )
The PR formula is derived from the NCAA Division III Strength of Schedule formula. Teams earn points for each game played. The number of points earned is determined by the outcome (won/lost/tied) and the opponents winning %.  Here are the values:

Game
Outcome
Opponent
Winning %
PR Points
Won >= 0.666 7
Won >= 0.500 6
Won >= 0.333 5
Won >= 0.000 4
Tied >= 0.666 5
Tied >= 0.500 4
Tied >= 0.333 3
Tied >= 0.000 2
Lost >= 0.666 3
Lost >= 0.500 2
Lost >= 0.333 1
Lost >= 0.000 0

Important Note: The performance ranking points earned for a game are based upon the opponents final winning percentages at the end of the regular season, not their winning percentage at the time the game was played. This means that the performance ranking points received for games already played will change during the season as your opponents winning percentage changes.

What about Points Scored / Points Allowed / Margin of Victory ?
These quantities are intentionally not used in the process of determining Tournament Seeding. The intent of the GAA Basketball program is to provide an environment that encourages the teaching of good sportsmanship, personal character, and basketball fundamentals. Using any of these quantities would  reward the team that either purposefully runs the score up on weaker opponents, or keeps their strongest lineup in the game while enjoying a large lead so as to surrender the fewest points.
